First I'm surprised to hear of significant sludge problems in multiple engines operating on 3,000 mile oil changes of SAE 5W-20.

I would want to confirm that the 5W-20 oil used was one that met the WSS-M2C153-H approval. Most do but I think so... Login to read more.
