Looking at a 1998 Subaru Legacy w/ 2.5 engine. Engine has a constant lifter rattle (or similar noise).Oil was black & stunk pretty bad like old gas, changing oil & filter made little difference. Alldata says it is a mech cam & is adjusted with shims like a VW.... Login to read more.
