I had a problem once with the exact same symptoms on a 4.6. I'm not sure if the 4.6 is similar to the 5.4 but if it is, check the PCV hoses that connect to the ends of the PCV tube. I had one with a collapsed hose that didn't respond to propane but ... Login to read more.
