Hi John

Have you amp clamped the feed wire to the pump yet? you should get about this many amps [1997 Chevrolet Pickup C1500, FP Waveform] but if you see somthing like this [1997 Chevrolet Pickup C1500, FP Waveform] you can start removing the tank.
