Fuel, spark, compression, but won't run
Posted to Technical Discussion Forum on 11/21/2025 4 Replies

Car was towed in no start. Customer said it was running weak for two days but no funny noises, then wouldn't start in morning. Didn't start on starting fluid. Has no codes, my coworker said it had no spark or inj pulse. I checked powers and grounds to ecu, they were good. When cranking, every few seconds 2-3 cylinders fire as if it's going to start. After a couple of days I checked, I get 3/8" spark and led test light shows injector pulses. Compression 180 lbs.

On a hunch, in spite of no codes, verified power and ground to CKP and verified connection to ecu. Has two CMP sensors, Alldata says both have 3 wires, but sensor B by belts is a 2 wire. According to Alldata they both are not connected to the ecu at connector C pins 31 and 45. I have my doubts if that diagram matches this car. No signs of rodents doing their job. Does anyone have any better info on these items, which may have nothing to do with the problem?

A piece of plug wire and a timing light gave a normal response although I couldn't see the pulley or marks and I can't imagine it's out of time.

I have a cheapo scope that I'm almost barely competent to use if there are any hints of what I might check.

I put new plugs in and from numerous tries to start it they look a bit dirty, maybe sooty, but very little, but I'm surprised they don't look spotless.

Im embarrassed to even mention this but online were a number of reports of these type of symptoms until the aftermarket starter was swapped for a factory one. This seems totally impossible. During my checking the aftermarket starter that's been in it for some years died and I put another same brand one in it.

Officially I'm just a bodyman, hopefully someone will point out some basic step I've overlooked, leading to a fix.
