Some early Fords did in fact have a firewall mounted ballast resistor. I assume the coil was designed for it.. Check some 46-48 V8 wiring diagrams and you will find this resistor in the feed wire to the coil.. This would have been the "Diving Bell" shaped dist... Login to read more.
