Why did this go so far off the rails?

If you have power at pin 5 of the relay, which should be hot at all times, why not have just tested pin 5 for power, have power, then jumped pin 5 at the relay to pin 3, key off, and tested for power at E4? Pin 5 is hot ... Login to read more.
