Removing SKIM from vehicle
Posted to Technical Discussion Forum on 4/1/2021 6 Replies

Can a SKIM's programmed PCM be re-programmed to remove the passive anti-theft feature? I would unplug the SKIM module in the steering column. A customer of mine asked if this could be done. Could the DRB 3 do it, or would I have to send the PCM out for a custom tune?

I was thinking it could not be done. But then I read this on identifix. Problem, "A body shop replaced the steering column with one with Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) and plugged it in, and now it won't start. This car doesn't have SKIM". Solution, "Remove the SKIM module and replace the PCM". In this situation, the body shop added passive anti-theft feature to the vehicle by accidentally plugging in the smart key immobilizer module located in the steering column. Could I not do the reverse, buy a used non-SKIM PCM and unplug the module? I would finish the task by writing the vin and mileage.

The customer themselves did some research online and felt it could be done. They found a re-builder & programmer who stated they could do the task.

My main concern is the instrument cluster. While AllData does not mention the instrument cluster as part of the passive anti-theft system, other than the bulb check. It's still part of the CCD buse communication line. I believe you need a Pin code to change the instrument cluster.

Your thoughts.

Thank you, Dwight.
