In AP1 (2.0) S2000 land it's called mechanical overrev. Usually caused by downshifting from 5th to 2nd or 6th to 2nd.

Those will fuel cut at 9100 rpm. The valves/springs can handle near 10,500, BUT the valve retainers can't and they crack. No damage is usual... Login to read more.
