Pre-HEI GM ignition switches actually had two 'start' outputs; one was for the starter, and one bypassed the ballast resistor. That's the output that ran the pump in 'crank'. I'm going to dig and see if I can find my old Motor diagram books, but can't remember... Login to read more.
