the 3 pin was just a 2nd attachment point on some fords (not usually a mustang, but it wont hurt). Some fords had optional gauges in the same cluster (might replace a blockoff plate or a clock if the option was ordered) and to make it easier so they wouldnt ne... Login to read more.
