I believe those marks just show that the vanos adjuster is in it's base position. If the cam wasn't exactly a tooth off, then the adjuster (cam gear / phaser / etc.) must have slipped on the camshaft, either due to inproper torque (past work, bolt not replaced... Login to read more.
