Could a first look sensor detect a VVL/VTEC problem?

Story: Misfire codes for cylinders 2 and 1 at greater than 4000 RPM that are never felt. Recent head gaskets (oil leak). DSO the CKP signal, no abnormalities seen (I was looking for a chipped tooth). Not fuel, not spark.
