Refer to the Ford TSB about oils. As to physical symptoms I assumed it was the spool valve sticking. I went by your description of start up poor idle, white smoke and smoothing out after a few minutes. Best test I know of it to add 2 quarts diesel fuel to oil... Login to read more.
