IDS self identification issue

Does anyone know how an IDS identifies the vehicle it's plugged into?

I have an 01 F150 vin 1FTRW07L71KB29557. When I plug the IDS in, it recognizes it as a 98 Windstar 3.0. The VIN number it displays is correct for the vehicle ....the 1FTRW number.
