Hi Rob. I just saw your post or I would have chimed in earlier. Do NOT use only a 2X4. Especially white pine. Yellow pine is stronger by a lot and I would add another one on top with a few screws to hold them in place. Placing one on it's side would be fine...... Login to read more.
