Alexander, backfiring was common in those days. Usually it was not the distributor. Often times it was the spark plug wires . Water in the fuel, weak fuel pump, worn out timing chain, bad lobe on the camshaft, bent push rods etc. I would rule some of them out ... Login to read more.
