Rob, have seen the pinion shaft bearings go bad and bunch up in one direction under pressure. I know you can get a pinion shaft bearing kit from GM. You need to pull the upper spool shaft seal to inspect it. Top bearing is a plain needle bearing and pretty eas... Login to read more.
