An old wise man once told me the reason grade 5 started w/ 3 dashes is because all bolts are atleast a grade 2, so those 2 dashes are implied, hence the 6 for a grade 8. Don't know if it's true but it sounds good. Also, that is why a grade 2 bolt has no marks. Login to read more.
