FWIW I have my own method to 'pop' these loose while leaving the differential housing in the vehicle.

One guy with a pry bar toward the upper front side of the axle while I smack it with a Slide Sledge "Frame Hammer" [...] [[...]] toward the lower rear side.... Login to read more.
