I'm a Calif smog tech and i have never heard of cleaning a cat. Just be sure it really is defective before you replace it. Do a back pressure test with the 02 unhooked and a pressure gauge hooked up reved up to about 2000 rpm. if its over 3 replace it. Login to read more.
