I think the only issue I have is touching the MAF wire with a q-tip. I wouldn't risk that, and it will leave some deposits. If the dirt won't come off with either an electrical cleaner or MAF sensor cleaner, it's toast. CRC makes a MAF sensor cleaner supposed ... Login to read more.
