Don, There are some versions that did use a wastegated turbo.(HO I think)

Some (most) had an EBP. (exhaust backpressure valve) installed between the turbo outlet and the down pipe.

The wastegate will have a (signal) hose coming from the compressor housing.... Login to read more.
