Viscosity is viscosity, no mater what type of lube you're talking about. SAE 50 is thinner than SAE 80W-90. It may be that no one makes a 50-weight gear lube, so the manufacture uses engine oil. I should point out that there are "Power Shift" transmision fluid... Login to read more.
