Well that's a new one to me Doc....5/16 nylon tubing (5/16" O.D.) in an air brake system.....sounds like they're using 5/16" compression fittings on it....copper tubing type stuff. The line you mentioned would normally be either 1/4" or sometimes 3/8" synflex.... Login to read more.
