IIRC, that black square ring is plastic and it's supposed to have a diagonal "crack" in it.

Either way, buy an IPR before you put in a pump. Also, check the drive gear nut to make sure it's not slipping, that pump has no keyed or tapered stud on the drive. Login to read more.
