I haven't seen any mention of pump timing. The 7.3 IDI was always harder to start than the 6.9 at the original 6 degrees BTDC factory setting. Ford/Navistar had a bulletin to time at 8 to 10 degrees BTDC. 8 to 9 is fine. Anything over that the combustion noise... Login to read more.
