Actually the opposite. I had a pair of studded tires on the front of a front wheel drive minivan. The rear tires were good tires, but not studded. I hit black ice, and the rear end pivotted around those front tires. I had no control whatsoever, and ended up in the ditch. Had the studded tires been in the rear, I would have felt the front loseing traction, and the rear would have stayed put so I likely would have stayed more or less in control.

Maybe using studded tires as an example is out of context for what you are discussing. Bottom line for me, just buy a complete set of good tires.
