I can remember back in the late 70s tried for tech at post
office got a score of over 90% with no added points for the
many PC options.
Went to the hands on and one task was to pull the
distributor out on a inline 6 spinning the engine over then
reinstall the distributor and just get the vehicle to start.
While I was at it I reset the proper timing and tightened
the distributor bolt.
Time to accomplish was 11/2 hours. I did it in something
around 15/20 min. Tester was very impressed and commented
that I was the only person to get the engine just running in
this 3 month test period. Due to the PC push on the PO. I
would not be eligible (just for my ears) They we're required
to hire one that was PC even if he could not pass the test.
With added points and failing the hands on test.
That was my real introduction into the dumbing down of
America. Cost me somewhere around $300 to sign up for a
class to follow the hoops required to jump thru and some big
manual to study from. What a waste of time and effort. ;-(
