My parts room has the shelving units. They are lettered "A", "B", and so on.

Each shelf in the unit is then numbered ,top being designated as "TOP" then each shelf 1,2,3 etc.

I use magnetic strips for the part / stock number and put it on front of shelf .... Login to read more.
