I found that the thermal idle air control valve; located on top of the thermostat housing was opening even though the coolant temperature was high enough that it should be closed. thanks for the replies... the end result was a clogged core...seems if the core readings are 5 degrees different it will lose the heat very quick... we ended up flushing the core 3 times with full strength cooling system flush (in the core only) then back flus...
