thanks for all the replies. most everyone hit the nail on the head. removed throttle body and found egr passage partly clogged in upper intake. picked carbon out and cleaned with frayed speedo cable in electric drill. problem cured. i can't believe i overlooke... Trouble codes: P0401 (insufficient egr flow).
