I had very few replies, but a couple supported my ecm theory. After verifying power from a/c control head to computer, and double cking the termistor, I went ahead and tried a ecm from a 'doner car' and that fixed it!

Thanks to all that replied. It turns out that the ECM didn't like not seeing a bad neutral safety switch and a bad speedometer cable at the same time.
