as usual most replies hit the nail on the head, the timing belt had six teeth missing and allowed one cam to jump. it didnt sound like the usual stripped belt noise. thanx for all the replies, iatn is the best tool in my box!!!

Thank you for all of the help and suggestions. It turned out to be a bad ignition switch. The switch was replaced and the problem is gone.
