Thanks to all who replied, most thought the maf was faulty or contaminated... and indeed it was. The new maf cured all problems. Several replies suggested resetting fuel trim values and then drive under hard accelleration. The Benz would hesitate and backfire ... Trouble codes: P0170, P0173.

This was a vacuum leak issue at the flame trap. Robert from Va, Robert from Tx, Yuval from Ma & Simba from CA knew the score. Another one of those vehicle specific trick questions.
