Have done it before. You can charge whatever you want. You can charge for travel time. You can charge for hotel stays and rental cars. The difficult side: You have to be very careful of what you say in court. Lawyers will try sometimes to get you to comment on areas that you are not versed in. Sometimes they will try to get you to state an emotional opinion. They will definitely look into your background to look for skeletons in your closet. The more money that is involved, the harder they will look. Hopefully you have no criminal history. They will look into your past civil lawsuits. The longer you do this, the more court testimony you will build up. And all of it will be reviewed by the opposing counsel. Since expert testimony is very powerful in court the opposition will do everything to denigrate you.
