"Trade", hell; it's a PROFESSION.
Anybody (as in automotive technician) can work on a vehicle.
Not everybody can diagnose and rebuild a transmission. That
makes it a profession. That's why there's a whole lot more
automotive technicians than there are, dyed in the wool,
transmission rebuilders.
CASE IN POINT: We no longer go to the automotive trade
colleges looking for fresh recruits. We are going to the
university's engineering departments. Those students know
how, and will, study T&PO on their own. They already know
electrical as in computer circuits. It's much easier to
teach them because they are simply better students than
automotive students.
