Rear Cover R&R - F4A42
Posted to Transmission Forum on 7/7/2014 2 Replies

After lowering the transmission and sub frame of this vehicle in order to remove the rear transmission cover it appears that the reverse clutch drum has slide back, possibly disengaging from the reverse clutch, as the rear cover seats on the drum before it mates with the transmission case.

I have spun, twisted and jiggled the drum in the hopes of reengaging the drum and clutches but am coming up about a quarter of an inch short, maybe just one more friction disc to go?

My question is can I remove the Reverse drum, Overdrive drum and Overdrive hub assemblies in order to install the reverse and overdrive clutches properly on the drums and hub, or will I be shooting myself in the foot? from my understanding this transmission is assembled from the rear forward and I am worried that removing the drum and clutch assembly may lead to me taking the unit out to completely reassemble it.

Any insight or recommendations would be appreciated as my arms were just about too tired to type this post after all that twisting.
