CFC 'Freon' products were patented about 1928. A patent than was good for 17 years if you paid all the fees, less if you didn't. The patent on R12 expired more than 50 years ago.

I don't believe that DuPont was the sole mfr. of freon even back in the 70's. Login to read more.
