Matt,

Typically, you want about 10 mA flowing through an LED. There is some voltage drop across the LED but you can ignore this to make the calculation simple:

For 5V, R = V/I = 5/0.010A = 500 ohms For 12V, R = V/I = 12/0.010A = 1200 ohms = 1.2 kohms
