1/4" is fine. Take a 1/2-5/8" nut, center it, blindly put a mig nozzle on it and weld hot staying to the center first, then fill the nut. It will build up before it sticks to the parent metal. It may not work the first couple times, but the bolt shrinks a litt... Login to read more.
