I didn't read the whole post. But, the 87 to me is the better meter. It is at least 4x faster in peak volts mode. 1ms for the 88, 250us for the 87. They can be had for good prices new if you look. I have an EM710 which is spec-wise Macs answer to the Fluke 88.... Login to read more.
