is there a file on the drive with a .kdb or .kdbx file extension? That's the actual database.

Get a new thumb drive, install a freshly downloaded KeePass 1.x on that drive and copy your .kdb or .kdbx file to the new drive, then see if KeePass can open it. Login to read more.
