Its not a Ford, but I had a Caddy once that was giving similar symptoms. It was early to mid 90's vintage, and long story short, the fix was a new steering pressure switch. Turns out Cadillac went into a pseudo-open loop mode when it saw high steering pressure... Login to read more.
