I've read of a couple of '97 K-2500's with 6.5 diesel engines on Transmission Rebuilders Network Int'l that had similar problems and a VCM reflash was the cure. A reflash may be worth checking into as this could apply to a '98 also. A Tranx2000 or similar tool... Login to read more.
