Dave Sounds like voltage issue. Have seen many of the internal harnesses go open inside trans. Can disconnect tcm and check continuity. Back probe tcm for voltage output. Kind of a pain on v.w. due to connector but doable if you are careful. Might find it eas... Login to read more.
