That era will probably come with an Allison transmission. The lighter duty 3/4 ton is available with a 4L80E. Either should be fine but for outright abuse look for an Allison.

The 4L65E (newer 4L60E) only comes in the 1/2 ton and smaller trucks. Login to read more.
