It wasn't a Toyota ....but we had a 90's Porsche 911 that had a knocking /rapping noise from the trans that was the dual mass flywheel. It too had excessive play like yours and a new flywheel and clutch fixed it. there are companys that sell alternative setups... Login to read more.
