I've seen that on tranny's when the trans starts to get a bit loose.

The end of the axle shaft pounds the side-gear shaft and "mushroom's" enough where the clip can't compress, or the splines no longer can pass thru the side gear. Not uncommon on Mazda's. Ea... Login to read more.
