The clutch pack you refer to under the end cover is the end(or OD) clutch. Technically, yes it applies in 3rd, but doesn't do much, as I've seen many fail and not affect 3rd gear. Even back in my Mitsu days(basically same tranny design) end clutch blown but 3r... Login to read more.
